Polonnaruwa / Ancient City of Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa is the second kingdom of Sri Lanka. It was the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura kingdom in 1055 AD. After that Polonnaruwa was the capital of Sri Lanka until 1310 AD.

Today Polonnaruwa is the main town / capital of Polonnaruwa district and UNESCO organization identified as a World Heritage Site.

Polonnaruwa ancient city is famous for its well-preserved ruins of an ancient Sinhala civilization. It is a live evidence for ancient Engineering and Technology. There are sacred temples, palaces used by kings, ancient building complexes, temple complexes and major irrigation tanks with in the ancient city of Polonnaruwa.

At the present Polonnaruwa is one of tourist hotspot in Sri Lanka and there are lot of places to visit.
