Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress, located near to Dambulla town in the Central Province of Sri Lanka.
It was built by King Kashyapa during the 477 - 495 CE. King Kashyapa murdered his farther King Dhathusena and got the Kingdom. After that, King Kashyapa expected an attack from his brother Mugalan and for that afraid he moved the capital and his residence from the traditional capital of Anuradhapura to Sigiriya.
Sigiriya is a rock fortress consist of upper palace on the top of rock, water gardens, boulder gardens and terrace gardens, the Apsara paintings and mirror wall. The Sigiriya site contains the ruins of the upper palace on the flat top of the rock and mid-level terrace includes the Lion Gate, the mirror wall and the Apsara paintings. The other gardens including Water garden and security moats and walls located at the lower terrace.
Sigiriya is one of wonder of the world due to the unbelievable technology used for the built Palace, water gardens, boulder gardens and draw paintings. Specially it shows the unbelievable talent and technology of ancient civil engineering including designing of water circulation and drainage systems, constructing huge structures and urban planning.
Now Sigiriya is a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site. It is also declared by UNESCO as the eighth wonder of the world. It is one of the best-preserved examples of ancient Civil Engineering.
The height of the Sigiriya rock is about 200 m and it is able to climb up to upper palace within 30 minutes.
Sigiriya is open for tourists from 7.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. on everyday and entry fee for a foreign tourist is about 30 US$.
