Anuradhapura was the first main Capital (first kingdom) of Sri Lanka during 437 BC to 1018 CE (nearly for
1500 years). Anuradhapura city is famous for its well-preserved ruins of an ancient Sinhala civilization. It
is a live evidence for ancient Engineering and Technology.
Currently, Anuradhapura is the Capital of North Central Province in Sri Lanka.
Anuradhapura, was the greatest monastic city in the Sri Lanka until the 11th century A.D. Today Anuradhapura, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Anuradhapura is one of tourist hotspot in Sri Lanka and there are lot of places to visit in Anuradhapura.
1. Sacred Places
Atamasthana (08 Sacred places) are located in Anuradhapura including Jaya Sri Maha Bodiya which is one of most sacred places of Buddhists. Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya is the oldest living tree in documented history of the world. It is a sapling from the historical Bodhi tree under which Buddha enlightened.
In addition to Jaya Sri Maha Bodiya there are several sacred Stupas in Anuradhapura such as Ruwanweli Maha Seya, Jethawanaraamaya, Abayagiriya, Thupaaraamaya, Mirisawetiya, Lankaaraamaya..etc. (please refer Atamasthana for further information)
2. Ancient Buildings, Architectural features and other Constructions
It can be seen lot of well-preserved ruins of large building complexes which shows the marvels of ancient civil engineering. Those building complexes includes palaces of ancient kings, temples, hospitals….etc.
In addition to buildings, there are lot of unique ancient architectural features can be seen in Anuradhapura such as Kuttam Pokuna (ancient swimming pool), Sandakada Pahana (moonstone)..etc.
3. Ancient Irrigation Technology
The first man made tank of Sri Lanka (Abaya wewa) is located in Anuradhapura. In addition to that there are lot of ancient tanks, canals and other irrigation structures can be seen Anuradhapura.
