Yapahuwa is located near to Maho (Mahawa) in Kurunegala district in North Western Province of Sri Lanka.
Yapahuwa was the 4 th Kingdom of Sri Lanka and it was the capital of Sri Lanka in the latter part of the 13th century (1273–1284). In 1273, King Bhuvenakabahu I transferred the capital from Dambadeniya to Yapahuwa and built a palace and fortress on a huge granite rock with hundred meters above the surrounding lowlands.
Yapahuwa is a rock fortress and it was safe and strong area in military against foreign invaders. The sacred Tooth Relic of the Lord Buddha was brought from Dambadeniya and kept in the Tooth RelicTemple built at the top of the third staircase.
Today Yapahuwa is one of main tourist attraction in Sri Lanka. The main tourist attraction is the main Staircase. The Stone stairway originally comprised of three flights of stone stairs, one above the other. However today the lower one has been replaced by cement steps.
‘Yapahuwa Lion’ is a stone sculpture, can be seen on the walls of the staircase is very famous stone
sculpture. Tourists can climb the rock and at the top of the rock it can be seen some ruins. Tourists can experience nice view of the area at the top of the rock. In Yapahuwa, there is an ancient Buddhist temple named “Yapahuwa Raja Maha Viharya”. In Yapahuwa temple there are Kandyan era images and paintings of the Lord Buddha.
