Sandakadapahana (Moonstone)

Location : Sacred city of Anuradhapura in North Central Province

Importance : Sandakadapahana which is also known as Moonstone, is a unique architectural feature that can be seen in Sinhalese architecture of ancient Sri Lanka. It is an artistic carving which is carved in semi-circular stone slab and it is usually placed at the bottom of staircases and entrances of temples and buildings. There are lot of Moonstones can be observed in Anuradhapura, but the Sandakadapahana which is near the Rathna Prasadaya is considered as best and artistic creation.
