Location : Kataragama in Monaragala District in Uva Province
Importance : Kataragama Dewalaya is a temple complex dedicated to the God named “Kataragama Deviyo”. This is very special temple in Sri Lanka, because not only Buddhists but Hindus, Muslims and Veddha people also worship this devalaya. As per the Buddhists’ believes “Kataragama Deviyo” is one of Guardian God of Buddhism. As per the Hindu people believes “Kataragama Deviyo” is God Murugan. “Katargama Perahera festival” is the main festival which is held annually during the month of July. It is a ceremonial procession to pay homage to the God. Kataragama Bodhiya (Kataragama Bo Tree) is also located in same premises. Kataragama Bo tree is also very Sacred Bo tree or the Sri Lankan Buddhists due to the one of 32 saplings of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura.
