Location : Matale in Matale District in Central Province
Importance : Matale Alu Vihara temple is an ancient Buddhist temple built by the King Devanampiyatissa during the 3 rd century of BC. But later this temple becomes very important sacred place for Sri Lankan Buddhists, because for the first time “Tripitakaya” (philosophical teachings of Buddhism) was written down completely on Ola leaves (palm leaves) by the venerable Monks during the 1 st century of BC. The king Walagamba sponsored for this event and 500 Monks joined to complete this historical task. Today Matale Alu Viharaya is a scenic ancient temple with consists of historical caves, paintings and Statues.
