Location : Aukana village near Kekirawa in Anuradhapura District in North Central Province
Importance : The Aukana statue is a standing statue of the Lord Buddha with a height of 12 m made by granite rock during the 5 th century. This statue was completed during the period of King Dathusena by a stone artist named “Barana”. The Aukana statue is considered as one of great standing statue in Sri Lanka due to its unbelievable characteristics. Aukana statue is not a general statue, because it shows the great expressions of the Lord Buddha. In addition to that the technology and finishing quality is marvelous, because the degree of alignment of the statue is perfect such that raindrop on the nose would drop straight down to small depression carved between the toes. Aukana Statue is located near to the Kala Wewa (a reservoir built by king Dhatusena) and today this statue is a great tourists’ attraction.
