Udawalawa National Park.

Udawalawa National Park is located in the border of Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces. The nearest main town is Embilipitiya.

Udawalawa National Park was created to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir. The total area of the forest is about 30,000 hectares.


The Importance / Specialty of Udawalawa National Park 

 Udawalawa National Park is a Dry Monsoon forest, located on the boundary of Sri Lanka's wet and dry zones. The annual rainfall is about 1750 mm and mean temperature is about 30 Celsius.

 Udawalawe is an important habitat for Sri Lankan elephants. With approximately 300 elephants residing within the area of 30,000 hectares in Udawalawa. Therefore, Udawalawa is one of the best places in the world to see wild elephants.

 In addition to the elephants, it can be seen Water Buffalo, Wild boar, Sri Lankan Spotted Deer & Sambar Deer, rusty-spotted cat, fishing cat and Sri Lankan leopard in Udawalawa Natinal Park.

 Udawalawa is also a good birdwatching site. Lot of Endemics such as Sri Lanka spurfowl, red- faced malkoha, brown-capped babbler, Sri Lanka grey hornbill and Sri Lanka junglefowl can be seen in the park.

 Udawalawa is also a habitat for fish and reptiles. Various types of lizards, crocodiles, snakes and lot of fish species including endemic species can be observed in the park specially inside and near to the Udawalawa Reservoir.


Visiting Udawalawa National Park

The governing body of the park is Department of Wildlife Conservation. The tourists can visit the park by hiring a safari jeep.

There are 3 safari options available for the guests.


1. Morning Safari (6.00am)
2. Afternoon Safari (2.30pm)
3. Full day Safari

For the safari, it can be hired an experienced guide and modified comfortable jeep at the entrance of the park. The tour can be more customized for guests for their preferences (Family safari, photography safari etc.).
