Somawathiya Stupa |
Location : Near Sungavila in Polonnaruwa District in North Central Province
Importance : Somawathiya temple is located inside the Somawathiya National Park on the left bank of Mahaweli river. Somawathiya temple is one of highest sacred place of Buddhists, since the Somawathiya Stupa is enshrining the Right Tooth Relic of the Lord Buddha. This Stupa is built by a regional ruler Prince Abhaya during the 2 nd century of BC. Later this stupa is named for Princess Somawathi, the sister of King Kavantissa, and the wife of the Prince Abhaya. Somawathiya Stupa is considered as a special sacred place which illuminates Buddha rays. There were several such incidences happenings in the recent past and there are many eye witnesses also. Wild elephants also worship this stupa. Today lot of pilgrims visit this place and many facilities were established.
